Chapter 10

AFTER LEAVING THE Meerashai, Kaniev traveled north, leaving the desert behind and crossing into Ceryria. As he traveled deeper into the forests of Ceryria, the single sharp, impossibly high peak that was Mount Vadaerna gradually rose before his view. It was a breathtaking sight, the peak passing through the clouds to emerge above them, giving the impression that the top of the mountain was actually floating on the clouds.

Unfortunately, Kaniev’s admiration of the view was somewhat dampened by the fact that he was going to have to climb that peak while remaining undetected by the sorcerer up there.

A bright new light appeared just north of center on his lodestone. Source Vadaerna; after months or even years of the sorcerer’s activities there, Vadaerna was becoming unstable. Other lights showed up on the lodestone, as well, including another Source in the Independent Kingdoms, either Enji or Anju, and an alarming flare off to the east, in the direction of the Inward Sea and the Vortex.

Kaniev didn’t even want to think about what could happen if the Vortex, surrounded by shipping lanes, malfunctioned. Fortunately, that light died away as quickly as it had appeared. With any luck, that meant the disturbance had settled down on its own without causing too much damage. More lights were also flickering to life around the stone, to the northeast, probably indicating the Source-rich Crown of the World, and to the northwest in Savaru, another land rich with powerful Sources. His lodestone was beginning to look like a night sky filled with stars.

The inescapable fact was that more and more Sources were becoming unstable, and something was going to go very wrong very soon unless Kaniev put a stop to whatever this reckless sorcerer was doing.

The journey through Ceryria was pleasant enough. Ceryria was a wooded, hilly land ruled by a number of independent barons who mostly got along with each other. The Ceryrian people were renowned for their friendliness and hospitality, and every village and town boasted at least one comfortable inn. Kaniev’s funds were in a sorry state, since he hadn’t been paid at the last half-dozen or so Sources he had attempted to repair, and he didn’t want to sell any more of his diminishing collection of silver jewelry if he didn’t have to. But the Ceryrian innkeepers were glad to let him do chores in exchange for meals, a night on a cot in the common room, and stabling and food for Mai.

At the inns, Kaniev learned from the friendly locals that climbing the foothills and lower slopes of Mount Vadaerna was a popular pastime in Ceryria among those who had the leisure, and even among those who didn’t. When he reached the village in the foothills of Vadaerna that served as a starting point for many of these expeditions, he found a party of young noblemen who would be starting a climb in a few days. Enthusiastically, they agreed to let him join them and to act as his guides for the first part of the journey.
